Abstract - A new method for the experimental determination of residual stresses in long composite circualr cylinders is demonstrated for a roller composed of two different materials as typically used for compound rollers in rolling mills. In order to check the correctness and accuracy of this new procedure the experimental process is simulated numerically by the use of finite element models. The main advantage in using a numerical reference is the exact in-advance-knowledge of the initial residual stress field which should be determined.
