Major research efforts are underway worldwide for developing new high-performance materials which combine high strength and high stiffness with light weight. Fiber reinforced polymers (e.g. GFRP with glass fiber and CFRP with carbon fiber reinforcements) are by now used in a wide (and growing) range of applications. Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs), which are currently investigated in a number of research projects, as well as Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are candidate materials for high temperature applications, their present use being concentrated in specialized aerospace structures. Other inhomogeneous materials being studied at the institute are foams and cellular materials as well as high speed steels.
Research at the ILSB in this field is based on the Continuum Micromechanics of Materials approach, which aims at predicting the overall and local behavior of composites and other inhomogeneous materials (e.g. funcionally graded materials, metallic foams or Biomaterials) by employing continuum mechanical methods at an appropriate microscale. Both analytical and numerical descriptions are used, the former consisting mainly of mean field methods and the latter comprising homogenization approaches for periodic microgeometries ("periodic microfield methods"), windowing, and embedding methods. Areas of special interest have been the thermomechanical behavior of both continuously and discontinuously reinforced MMCs in general and effects of the reinforcement arrangement (microtopology, microgeometry) in particular. A further research field are continuum mechanical models of nanoparticles and nanocrystallites.
The work on continuum micromechanics and materials modeling is tightly integrated with the research focus on Lightweight Structures, where stress and stability analyses of laminated and sandwich shells are carried out with Numerical Engineering Methods.
The ILSB in cooperation with the Institute of Mechanics, University of Mining and Metallurgy, Leoben, Austria, from 1991 to 1997 hosted the Christian Doppler Laboratory "Micromechanics of Materials", which was devoted to industry-related research in the field of micromechanics, and from 1997 to 2004 the Christian Doppler Laboratory "Functionally Oriented Materials Design", which used continuum micromechanical methods to a large extent. At present the ILSB hosts a node of the AAR (Austrian Aeronautics Research / Network for Materials and Engineering), part of the work of which pertains to micromechanics.
For additional information on the field of Micromechanics of Materials see also the ILSB web pages presenting Links and Data Relevant to Micromechanics of Materials and Related Fields.
