LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURES AND STABILITY



The need for stiff and strong structures of particularly light weight arises from functional requirements (e.g. for aircraft, spacecraft, robots, ships and boats, sporting goods), from considerations of user comfort (e.g. in automobiles, rail vehicles), and from economical constraints (e.g. in containers).

Research in modern lightweight design at the ILSB concentrates on design and dimensioning concepts for lightweight structures, on computational and optimizing methods at various length scales, and on the modeling of lightweight materials, especially of composite and compound materials.

Work is focused on the development and application of analytical and Numerical Methods for the layout, design, and analysis of lightweight structures. Such approaches allow the study of the deformation and stress responses of structures, their load-carrying capacity, their stability, their dynamic behavior and their crash behavior. Special research interest is devoted to instability phenomena. Algorithms are developed, implemented and tested in practical applications.

Experimental work on lightweight structures at the ILSB is related to the testing of model structures rather than to material testing. Additional relevant fields of research are methods of optimal design and fracture mechanics.
