Because there have been difficulties in accessing the instructions for
authors of manuscripts for the ASME Journal of Engineering Materials and
Technology (JEMT), a short compilation of relevant data is provided in the
following for participants of the EC429.
Please, note that this page is not an official ASME or JEMT page.
Some points have been specifically tailored for participants of the EC429
and do not pertain to general submissions of manuscripts to the JEMT.
GENERAL
- Titles of papers should be brief.
- Authors can obtain copies of the ASME Manual MS-4, "An ASME Paper", from
the editor and are urged to do so before drafting their papers in final
form.
- The lead author is entitled to 25 complimentary copies, which should be
distributed among the co-authors.
Larger quantities of reprints can be ordered from the ASME Order
Department, 22 Law Drive, Box 2300, Fairfield, NJ 07007-2300.
Quotations will be sent on request.
MANUSCRIPT FORMAT
- JEMT manuscripts related to the EC429 should be submitted in final form
to
Prof. Ewald Werner, TU München.
Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not
been published elsewhere nor has it been submitted for publication
elsewhere.
A paper which would occupy more than 6 pages of the JEMT will be
returned to the author for abridgment.
- The author should state his business connection, the title of his
position, and his mailing address.
A short abstract (50 to 100 words) should be included on the first page
immediately preceding the introductory paragraph of the paper.
- Five copies of the manuscript are required.
One of these must be a carefully prepared printer's copy, typed in
double spacing, on one side of the page only, with wide margins, on
22 by 28 cm (8½ by 11-in.) opaque white paper.
SOFTWARE
- Authors are encouraged to submit a copy of the paper on disk upon
notification of acceptance of the paper.
USE OF SI UNITS
- All manuscripts submitted to ASME must use SI (metric) units in text,
figures, or tables.
In addition to SI units, English units may be included parenthetically.
MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSIONS
- All mathematical expression should be typewritten.
Care should be taken to distinguish between capital and lowercase
letters, between zero (0) and the letter (O), between the numeral (1)
and the letter (l), etc.
A letter representing a vector cannot be printed with an arrow above
or below it.
Boldface should be used or the letter should be underscored with a single
wavy line wherever it appears in the text, to designate boldface type.
- A list of symbols carefully marked for the use of the editor (thus:
μ, Greek l.c. mu), if it has not been included in the body of the
paper, should accompany the manuscript on a separate page.
- Numbers that identify mathematical expressions should be enclosed in
parentheses.
Numbers that identify references at the end of the paper should be
enclosed in brackets.
Care should be taken to arrange all tables and mathematical expressions
in such a way that they will fit into a single column when set in type.
Equations that might extend beyond the width of one column (fractions
that should not be broken or long expressions enclosed in parentheses)
should be rephrased to go on two or more lines within column width.
Fractional powers are preferred to root signs and should always be
used in more elaborate formulas.
The solidus should be used instead of the horizontal line for
fractions whenever possible.
REFERENCES
- Acceptable references include: Journal articles, dissertations, published
conference proceedings, numbered paper reprints from conferences,
books, reports available from the U.S. Government, submitted articles
if the journal is identified, and private communications.
- Within the text, references should be cited in numerical order
according to their order of appearance.
The numbered reference citation should be enclosed in brackets.
- In the case of two citations, the number should be separated by a
comma.
In the case of more than two reference citations, the numbers should
be separated by a dash.
- References to the original sources for cited material should be listed
together at the end of the paper; footnotes should not be used for this
purpose.
References should be arranged in numerical order according to their
order of appearance within the text.
- References to journal articles, papers in conference proceedings, or
any other collection of works by numerous authors should include:
- last name of each author followed by their initials
- year of publication
- full title of the cited article
- full name of the publication in which it appeared
- volume number (if any) in boldface
- inclusive page numbers of the cited article
- References to textbooks, monographs, theses, and technical reports
should include
- last name of each author followed by their initials
- year of publication
- full title of the publication (in italic or underlined)
- publisher
- city of publication
- inclusive page numbers of the work being cited
- In all cases, the titles of books, periodicals, and conference
proceedings should be underlined or in italics.
ILLUSTRATIONS
- Originals and four copies of figures must accompany the manuscript.
Line drawings should not be larger than 22 by 28 cm (8½ by 11-in.)
and should be planned for reduction to column width.
Lettering should be large enough to be clearly legible when the
illustration is reduced.
Photographs of equipment or test specimens must be glossy prints and
should be used sparingly.
Captions for figures should be typed double-spaced and include as the
last page(s) of the manuscript.
The figure number and author's name should be written in the margin
or on the back of each illustration.
Illustrations are not returned to the author, unless a specific request
is made to do so.
VOLUNTARY PAGE CHARGE
- Papers selected for publication in the ASME Transactions are subject to
a voluntary page charge of $75 per journal page, which will be invoiced,
through the author, to the author's company, institution, or agency.
Publication is not dependent upon payment of the voluntary page charge.
100 reprints are provided when a paper has been published in a journal
and the voluntary page charge has been paid.
Additional reprints can be ordered fro the Technical Publishing
Department, ASME, Three Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016.
MANDATORY EXCESS-PAGE CHARGE
- The lead author of an ASME Transaction paper which exceeds the standard
length of six pages (6000 words) will be assessed a mandatory excess
page charge of $200 per page for each page over six journal pages.
This charge will be included, as a separate item, on the same invoice
as the voluntary page charge.
